70th Anniversary of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan – Preserving Heritage in Swat

The 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan was held at Swat Serena Hotel on 25th October 2025, commemorating seven decades of outstanding archaeological research and heritage preservation. Distinguished guests included Hon. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, Dr. Miangul Mahmud Aurangzeb, Dr. Abdul Samad (Secretary, Tourism, Archaeology & Culture Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mr. Arshad Khan (Former Secretary, Higher Education), Prof. Dr. Hassan Sher (VC University of Swat), and MD PTDC Mr. Aftab ur Rehman Rana, among other national and international dignitaries. The event highlighted the Italian Archaeological Mission’s enduring contributions to uncovering and preserving the Gandhara Civilization, achieved through collaboration with the Royal Family of Wali-e-Swat and Pakistan’s Directorate of Archaeology & Museums. Speaking at the occasion, MD PTDC Mr. Aftab ur Rehman Rana lauded the Mission’s remarkable work, acknowledging Prof. Dr. Luca Maria Olivieri’s 37-year dedication to heritage conservation and community engagement in Swat. The celebration emphasized the potential of Buddhist heritage tourism to generate socio-economic development, support conservation efforts, and create employment opportunities for local communities. Mr. Rana also highlighted his experience working with Dr. Olivieri on the Archaeology, Community and Tourism Project (ACT) in Swat, advocating for greater youth and community participation. The event reinforced the importance of international collaboration in heritage preservation and showcased Pakistan’s commitment to promoting community-based archaeological tourism, cultural awareness, and academic partnerships. It concluded with recognition of the Italian Mission’s legacy and the shared vision to further develop sustainable, heritage-focused tourism in Swat and beyond.
